Eliminate Mold and Mildew Stains and Clean up Your Tile Grout

Have you ever had mildewed grout or stains on your tiles? Have you every wondered what you could do to remove it without causing permanent damage? Have you ever felt frustrated because nothing seemed to work? Well, we feel your pain and are here to help you get rid of your mildew grout problem once and for all. After all, you and your tile and you deserve so much more! In this article, we will discuss five tips that you can use right away to help you control your mildew and/or stain problem.

Commercial Cleaning Products for Grout Stained with Mold and Mildew

To remove stains and mildew, purchase a product like Oxy-clean and make it into a paste by using hot water and the powder. You should then apply it to your stained grout with a toothbrush. Afterwards, you should scrub it and then dry with a towel. You can also try a chalk like cleaner stick that can be purchased at your local hardware store. To use it, you simply apply the chalk cleaner directly to the stained area and the stain/mildew is then bleached clean. Lastly, you can purchase a commercial grout cleaner that will zap the stain and blast away the mildew. To use this method, you should apply gloves and then spray the grout cleaner on the stained grout. You can then scrub it with a brush and thoroughly rinse it. It should then be dried with a white towel and sealed with grout sealer for even more protection.

Homemade Cleaning Products For Mold and Mildew Stains

For those of you who would rather go the homemade route, you can clean the area with soapy water mixed with bleach. You can also make a paste out of some water, lemon juice and baking soda. Once you do this, you should apply the paste to the mildewed or stained area with a toothbrush and scrub away until it is shiny and clean. For those heavily stained or mildewed areas, you should mix a solution of hydrogen peroxide and water directly on the spot. Let it sit for about 20 minutes and then repeat the process. The stain or mildew should remove easily. Note: This method should only be used on plain not colored grout as it might bleach the color.

Scrub Free Grout Cleaning Products

If you prefer not to scrub, you can try a product like Kleen Strip Green or you can rent a steam cleaner that uses high temperature water vapors combined with pressure to clean the area. The benefit of this method is that it sanitizes and cleans the area and also removes allergens for allergy suffers.

In conclusion, mildew and stains can be problematic for owners that have grout. However, if you utilize both commercial and homemade cleaning products and put in a little time and effort, you can lick your stain and mildew problem and will have beautiful grout in no time at all!

Tile Grout Replacement

Tile Grout Replacement: Don’t let this household project scare you. If you can stand to be on your knees for a couple of hours, replacing tile grout can be done by just about anyone. Buy the grout replacement mix from you local hardware or home improvement store. Be sure you check the color – you want it to match or be slightly lighter.

You will also need a flat head screwdriver just the size of the grout gap to dig out the old stuff, a grout trowel and sealer.

From home, you will need a bowl of warm water and an old, lint free rag. Once you get home, roll up a towel for your knees and get to work digging out the old grout. Once you have successfully scraped out the old grout and cleaned up the area, prepare the replacement grout according to directions and put it where the old grout just came out. The grout trowel will help you get it just where you want it and the old rag will wipe up any bits that go astray.

Once you have accomplished the grout application to your satisfaction, follow the directions on the sealer (usually a matter of painting it on), and you are officially a home improvement wizard!

Be sure you follow up yearly with a new coat of sealant and every two years with another application of grout. Soon you will be taking on the caulking around the bathtub as well.
