How to remove inorganic stains. Inorganic stains come from material that is not from a living organism such as lime and mineral deposits, rust, soap scum, and stains from chemicals.

Burned incense stains on granite

Postby Kalani » Fri Aug 22, 2008 10:18 am

I rent a place.
There on granite surface I was lighting incense, and did not remove the burnt ones right away. They leave small stains coloured light brown.
I tried to clean with domestic cleaning device, but it didn't work - at all.

If I try mix of flour or that of poultice, I am afraid I might damage the surface, make bleached stains, or damage the surface in quality and shine.

How can I safely remove stains - is there a way? I live in small town, and fear that here it doesn't exist professional cleaning service.

I need help especially because I rent.

Can you, please advise me?

Thank you.

Hi Kalani,
Welcome to Mrs. Clean’s Forum!

Removing stains from natural stone can be a challenge, but it can be done!
If the granite is damaged or has lost its finish, be careful, because some cleansers can actually make it worse. If this is the case, you may have a permanent stain and you should consult a professional.

You can try these tricks:

Baking soda works wonders on many stains because it is a very mild, gentle abrasive and can be used safely on most surfaces. Just wet the counter, sprinkle some baking soda and scrub the stain with a toothbrush.

You can also try to scrub the stain with a dab of non-gel toothpaste.

Mix a poultice made of cream of tartar with hydrogen peroxide to form a paste. Coat the stained area and leave on until the paste dries. As the poultice dries, it should draw out the stain with it. Scrub the residue off with a non-scratching scrub sponge. The stain should come off with it.

Good Luck and let me know how it turns out!
