Hello Misty -
Here is some feedback on the two vacuums you've mentioned. I went straight to our house cleaners to see what they had to say.
Dyson - Although Dyson manufactures quality vacuums and they have many favorable features, our house cleaners didn't care for the weight. As far as thick or high pile carpet goes they didn't think it would be a good choice unless you were really buff or looking to get really buff.
Oreck - This was a model we used to use, it worked great, and the cleaners liked it but the parts had to be replaced quite often. Saying that - we do work our vacuums cleaners hard in this business but in the long run it may not hold up like you'd like.
Riccar - We used to use the Oreck and switched to the Riccar. Their upright vacuum cleaners have more metal than most other brands making it withstand wear and tear better, lasting longer than vacuums made from plastic.
The Vibrance family of vacuums come in six different model types but the Premium model is the only one in this family that comes with a floor selector switch for your different floor types.
There is also the Radiance family of vacuums that come with a 7 stage S Class HEPA filter and reinforced metal pivots and a kevlar poly-v belt so you can feel confident this vacuum will do the job and not let you down. These also have a floor selector switch and carpet height adjustment along with other tools.
Cons - No bagless models and bags need to be ordered, heavy, and only authorized dealers can sell them.
Pros - Made in America. Metal components that last longer, great suction.
Kirby - Made from diecast aluminum and plastic. Comes with a HEPA filter and comes with state of the art tech drive (it pretty much drives itself) making it easier on your shoulders. Has many attachments for cleaning and polishing floors and variable height adjustments.
Built to last and most people own them forever. A co-worker has had her Kirby for 10 years, she uses it in the house and outside to clean her car out.
As a matter of fact when her son was little he used to ride on it while she vacuumed, which says something for the durability of the vacuum.
Cons - Heavy and pricey.
Pros - Clean anything and great suction.
The choice depends on what features are most important to you, the types of flooring you have, do you want a bagless vs. using a bag, HEPA filter, etc. If you decide you like the higher priced vacuum you can always look on ebay for better pricing.
