Carpet Cleaning for Allergies

Postby KNOCKOUT » Fri Jan 15, 2010 8:40 pm

If you have allergies, and have carpet, then you may need a regular scheduled cleaning at least every 6 months. When hiring a professional cleaning company, make sure the ask if they hot water extract aka steam clean. They need to be able to reach a temperature at least 180 degrees at the carpet, in order to sanitize by killing dust mites and bacteria. After a good carpet cleaning, be sure to maintain your carpets with regular vacuuming, with a bagged hepa filter vacuum cleaner. These vacuum cleaners might be a little inconvenient because of the bag, but it is a true hepa filter and therefore does not release the VOC (volatile organic compounds) into the air, that could inflame your allergies. One last point about carpet cleaning for allergy relief, make sure that the company offers or uses non-toxic solutions that are greenseal.org certified. I hope this helps.

Thanks for sharing information.Carpet cleaning is very necessary for our health. These absorb dust particles and bacteria very soon, which are very harmful for us,this can create diseases like asthma and allergy. So more the carpets will be cleaned, more safe will be the life.

rightly said. Carpets though can be vaccumed regularly as a part of DIY regular cleaning, it does need a professional touch every 6 months as carpets are carriers of all sorts of micro organisms and dirts. This can have negative repercussions on health especially if you have toddlers and elderly people at home. Hot water extraction, steam cleaning etc are some of the techniques used. However, your carpet cleaner should be the best person to advice on how to go about which depends on the cleaning needs of the carpet in subject and the carpet fibres/material.

Carpet Cleaning for allergies?

I think that it's kind of a joke and a gimmick. Carpet cleaning is for particulates that get stuck onto the carpet fibers and will not come up with vacuuming. If it's not going to come up unless you are going to use a steam cleaner on it, it isn't going to affect your allergies at all.

Vacuuming with a good heppa vacuum is the best thing to do.

another note about allergies and carpet many people overlook:

Carpets are good for allergies: I see a trend of people concerned with allergies to replace that carpeting with hard floors. people think that this will cause less airborne allergens, but without the carpet to trap and hold the dust, it just gets blown into the air from the floor much easier. Having a carpet to hold the dust down until you vacuum helps, so don't throw away your carpets too soon.

just a few thoughts from a carpet cleaner

That's a good point gustav, if the particulates won't come out with regular vacuuming, then they won't just float out at any time and flare up people's allergies. Hepa vacuums are definitely the way to go. Just make sure your vacuum has a true hepa filter - there's a difference in the quality and rating of hepa filters. You can look up the difference on the internet. However, I think that there is still some benefit associated with carpet cleaning for allergy sufferers. Depending on the severity of one's allergies, even if 95% of the allergens are removed, the other 5% can still cause problems. It's hard to believe that people can have such bad allergies, but some people really have quite sensitive systems. As dust mites are one of the most common allergens triggering problems, carpet cleaning with a disinfectant can kill these mites. I would recommend using Benefect which is an EPA registered disinfectant made from thyme oil.

Some of the simple and most important thing is that use allergen-proof covers on mattresses and pillows. Avoid foods and medicines that cause itching and hives.

I think you made a great point about the VOC's too. Not many people think about that. VOC's can be just as dangerous as allergans. States like California have taken great steps in limiting VOC use which makes it tough to find really good products. They are out there though. Green Works and Genesis 950 are perfect examples of keeping VOC's down while cleaning. In addition, an air purifier is helpful to have running in carpeted areas.

Carpet Cleaning for Allergies
1. Use doormats at entrances. This will greatly reduce the amount of soil transferred onto your carpet. Where possible remove your shoes - and wipe your pet's paws - before walking on your carpet.
2. Vacuuming should be carried out at least one day per week on areas where the carpet receives heavy stains and dusts.
3. Vacuuming doesn't remove all odours, so one time per month sprinkle your carpet with baking soda before vacuum.
4. Deep clean carpet with a Vax carpet cleaner every 6 months.

nice one knockout.

Many people are into the notion that only steam cleaning is the perfect method. In fact the method chosen depends on the fabric type, age of the fabric, the type of stain etc.

Carpets can be cleaned by yourself or professionally. Vacuuming can be done twice a week for allergy sufferers, but a vacuum cleaner with a High-Efficiency Particulate Air filter, or HEPA filter, should be used as it will capture all of the tiny particles released by the vacuum.

Deep cleaning on carpets is done at most homeowners' discretion, but allergy sufferers may need deep carpet cleaning more frequently. Steam cleaning and vapor steam cleaners can be used to deep clean carpets, removing any particulate matter from the deep-down fibers that is impossible to remove with standard vacuuming. Professional carpet cleaners can be used in order to have carpets cleaned with these devices or they can be rented.

Doing Vacuum cleaning is the best options for people with allergies. However, the options suggested by other members are also helpful.
