cleaning a leather sofa

Postby mu1ski » Sat Aug 05, 2006 8:12 am

My wife and I just "inherited" a black leather sofa from my parents. It is in very good shape and we would like to keep it that way. Any tips on cleaning/conditioning it? We saw the white vinegar/linseed oil mixture on this website. Is that the raw or boiled linseed oil you'd get a home depot or the edible variety you'd find with things like flax and hemp oils at health food stores?

Hi Mu1ski,
Welcome to Mrs. Clean!

You can use either neatsfoot oil or the raw or food grade linseed oil. Boiled linseed oil contains metallic additives to assist in drying, but is not necessary on your leather furniture.

if you want it done right the first time, call a professional to clean, remoisturize and protect.

since it was free, look at the investment in a pro as getting a leather sofa for like $200.

don't use home brews on leather (yours sounds like it might be a pigments leather) if so, it's more forgiving when you mess up. if it's an aniline leather (just dyed hide) be very careful, or the in-laws may become outlaws if you mess it up!!!
