my son works in a lumber yard debarking trees and building log homes, and he has tree sap all over his clothes. what can I use to get the tree sap out without damaging his clothes?

There are several methods to try for tree sap removal. The first is found at http://www.mrscleanusa.com/en/cleaning- ... stain.html under lipstick removal:
Start with alcohol, which should work well and is inexpensive. Pull off any chunks but do not rub, or you'll spread the sticky sap. Simply take a clean, white cloth and moisten it with alcohol. Then, blot the area(s).

Also, there's a fairly new product on the market called Motsenbocker’s Lift Off #2 and it is amazing. This petroleum-based product not only works on tree sap but also works exceptionally well on any oil-based stain such as paint, crayons, tar, candle wax, lip stick, chewing gum, bumper stickers, price tags, contact paper, and more. In addition, Motsenbocker’s is great for fabric, tile, tools, plastic, vinyl, etc.

I also looked on the web and found a product called Citra-Solve, a "natural" cleaner and degreaser created from oil from oranges and sold at natural food stores. The instructions from the writer are: Drop some on the sap full-strength, let it sit for a minute and then wipe off with a paper towel.

Another popular method is to use WD-40 on the spot. You will have to use a vinager and water solution to removed the grease from the WD-40. Wash the "sappy" clothes separately.

Note: If you get sap on "good clothes" vs. work clothes, test in an inconspicuous spot first.

Rubbing alcohol worked like magic! Removed tree sap off my brothers favorite pants!i thought that i will have to loose my favorite paint , but thank gos it got rmoved.
