How to remove inorganic stains. Inorganic stains come from material that is not from a living organism such as lime and mineral deposits, rust, soap scum, and stains from chemicals.

iron pot stain on granite

Postby mahilly » Thu Jan 21, 2010 11:20 pm

Hello,
I have a dark polished granite counter top. A few days ago we left a cast iron pot ("dutch oven") on the counter overnight. in the morning it had left rings in the granite surface where the pot was in contact. The stain was not due to heat, the pot was cold and had just been cleaned and rinsed. The stain is a hazy silver-ish color with tiny specs of red iron oxidation. The pot was wet so I am assuming this caused some type of reaction between the iron and granite. I tried cleaning the stain with CLR and a rag, but no dice. Any suggestions what I can do about this? Thanks.

Hello Mahilly –

The best way to remove any stain from granite is to use a poultice. That being said no harsh chemicals should ever be used on polished stone surfaces as this can etch and destroy the surface and make the stain permanent.

Although we do have tips on Mrs. Clean for removing stains from granite that you can try – unfortunately it may not work after using the CLR.

Try this method using the poultice and if this does not work you may have to hire a professional to re-polish the surface of your granite.

I have succesfully removed rust stains from outdoor kitchen granite countertops (very porous=hard to get stains out) using a product called "super iron out". You can get it at any hardware store or walmart. Mix as directed with clean water and multiple applications to keep it wet with mixture. Good luck
