Is there a way to clean solidified olive oil from upholstery

Postby Cygnus » Wed Aug 15, 2007 12:07 pm

I spilled some in my car. It is now solid and hard. I am trying to sell the car now. Is there a secret to cleaning this up?

Olive Oil issue

Hello Cygnus and Welcome!
I did some research and wanted specific information on olive oil.
(These directions are for fabric upholstery only!) If you have leather, let me know and I will research further.

According to Good Housekeeping:

1. Scrape off excess oil.
2. Sprinkle baking soda, cornstarch, or other absorbent on the stain. Let stand 10 to 15 minutes, and then vacuum.
3. Using a clean white cloth, sponge the stain with a dry-cleaning solvent.
4. Blot until the solvent is absorbed.
5. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 until the stain disappears.

If that doesn't do the trick, you can try using Head and Shoulders Shampoo. Use a small brush such as a toothbrush. Rub in circles. Use lukewarm water for excess shampoo and wait until it dries to vacuum.

1 If the spill is solid or semi-solid (like butter) remove the excess by gently lifting it off with a blunt knife.
2 Blot.
3 Dab on methylated spirits, but do not apply spirit directly, use cotton wool or a soft cloth or use a recognized brand of upholstery cleaner.
4 Blot.
Repeat stages 3 and 4 until stain disappears, or there is no further improvement.

Always use first in an inconspicuous place first to test color fastness. Good luck and let me know what works!
