Hello felines47

It’s great that you found a good deal but not so great about the smell and the possibility of getting a little second hand smoke while you sleep.

First make sure you’ve vacuumed with a vacuum cleaner that has good suction. Then try your cleaning method. Fresh air is always a good aid in removing odors; is it possible to take the mattress out on the deck?

Vinegar, Water, and Baking Soda.
In a clean spray bottle put 1 cup warm water, 1 cup vinegar, and 2 tablespoons baking soda, shake a little to mix the baking soda completely. Spray it on the mattress and let it dry overnight.

The next day vacuum the mattress. Make sure you do vacuum because the baking soda will absorb the smoke odor you want to get rid of. Repeat for other side.

Vamoose.
We don’t have experience with this product but the manufacturer claims it is “very effective at eliminating cigarette and tobacco odors. It can penetrate and react with tar and nicotine, dissolve it and convert them into gaseous molecules causing no damage to fabrics, hard surfaces or materials.” They also state it will permanently get rid of tobacco smells at the molecular level.

Other Odor Removers.
There are a many odor removers available that can work in a variety of ways; take a look at the list and see what other options you have.
