Thank you for posting on the Mrs. Clean forum.
We can try and help you out with the cat urine stain and possible urine smell.
You can try this homemade remedy, you may want to put on a pair of gloves:
If you catch the spot when it is still wet:- Absorb as much of the cat urine as possible using paper towels or an old towel.
If the cat urine has dried:- Wet the area with a solution of 50% white vinegar and 50% water in a spray bottle
- The acidity of the vinegar will neutralize the ammonia in the cat urine.
- Work this into the affected area of the mattress
- Allow to almost dry – you can assist with the drying by blotting with paper towels
If you own a wet/dry vacuum or a steam cleaner, use that to remove excess moisture.
Apply a liberal amount of baking soda over the affected area then drizzle over the baking soda a quarter cup of hydrogen peroxide mixed with a teaspoon of liquid dishwashing detergent.
Work this in with a scrub brush or old toothbrush to dissolve the baking soda, this may help to lift the stain. You may need to repeat the process, using just a little of the mixture each time so the mattress does not get too wet.
Allow the mattress to dry completely and air out.
If you were using this on carpet or somewhere that shows the stain, you should test in an inconspicuous spot first and make sure it doesn’t discolor the material of what you are trying to clean.
As we all know, it is important to clean up the cat’s urine quickly and clean it well or your cat will continue to urinate in the same place.
Some other tips to prevent future accidents:
- Check with your vet to make sure your cat is healthy
- Make sure the cat’s litter box is in a quiet but easily accessible location
- Keep your cat’s litter box clean or he may seek out a new spot
- Try out a different kind of litter
- You can discourage a cat from urinating in an area by sprinkling a lemon or other citrus scent in the area
It sounds like you already know the cat is looking for your attention.
We hope this has helped you and you have success with your cat being a comfort to you and not stress.
