Wood stain on rock fireplace

How to remove inorganic stains. Inorganic stains come from material that is not from a living organism such as lime and mineral deposits, rust, soap scum, and stains from chemicals.

Wood stain on rock fireplace

During a remodeling project oil based brown wood stain spilled on a gray natural stone hearth. Is there anything I can do to neutralize or remove it? Thanks

Stain on natural stone

Postby mrscleannw » Wed Apr 02, 2008 2:12 pm

Hello roho and Welcome to Mrs. Clean's Forum!

I think I can help you out on this!
I'd recommend trying medical strength hydrogen peroxide (from the drug store), which is almost neutral pH.

Hydrogen peroxide is mildly alkaline, and is almost as good of an oxidizer as bleach. Hydrogen peroxide breaks down into plain water when exposed to sunlight.

So I'd try making a poultice using whiting or even cream of tartar or corn starch mixed with hydrogen peroxide. Cover the stain with the mixture and put some plastic wrap over it to keep it damp. Let the poultice sit between 1 to 48 hours, depending on the age and level of the stain. The poultice should help draw out the stain. You should test this mixture in an inconspicuous place first to ensure that there is no damage to the surface of the stone.

Good Luck and let me know how it turns out!

Thank you , Mrs Clean

I couldn't believe it but your poultice of hydrogen peroxide and cream of tartar worked. My stone hearth is as good as new. Many thanks
